Your agency’s policy is to not to pay interns but to reimburse travel and lunch expenses. In a new business meeting, a prospective client stresses the importance of their brand values and how they expect their business partners to conform as nearly as possible to the same values, including “fair play and fair pay”. The prospective client asks what your policy is towards payment of interns.

Logically, this requirement can be extended to require consultants not mislead potential clients, be it in new business meetings or otherwise.  Being upfront about the company’s internship policy is therefore the right course of action.

Clause 2 of the APPC Code of Conduct states

Political practitioners must act with honesty towards clients and the institutions of government.
